Keeping Group Activities Organized

Just about anyone who’s coordinated snacks for group activity knows what it’s like to see participants either show up with nothing or a lot of the same thing. Such snafus prompted the founders of SignUpGenius to create a better way to organize events. The site www.signupgenius.com offers sign-up creation, group messaging, and administrative tools for free, and a premium version also includes reporting, automation, and advanced admin features.

“The site’s simple and powerful online sign-up forms replace paper sign-up sheets and reply-all emails for hassle-free event coordination,” says Jad Talbert, Vice President of Architecture at SignUpGenius. “With Adobe ColdFusion and a small development team, we build easy-to-use products that help users simplify their busy schedules.”

Since it was launched in 2008, SignUpGenius has added features and improved application performance with Adobe ColdFusion to support processing large volumes of simultaneous sign-ups per second, sending millions of reminder emails per month, and processing large reports for users in real time Besides helping the company’s team of eight full-time developers update features quickly, Adobe ColdFusion supports scalable business flexibility.

A multi-instance deployment lets SignUpGenius triple online traffic to each of its servers, which makes it easier for the company to handle busy times and keep applications running smoothly for users. The company is also evaluating the new ColdFusion feature that allows session sharing across servers to improve load balancing. https://adobe.ly/2neByxy

ProActive Software takes product development and design up a notch

The days of a company’s workforce coming together at one location at the same time are long gone. In many industries virtual teams are now the norm, making a solid collaboration strategy more important than ever.

That’s where ProWorkflow comes in. Developed by ProActive Software, ProWorkflow gives thousands of users worldwide access to tools and project details so they can manage their tasks, time, and contacts from desktops and mobile devices. The platform is built on Adobe ColdFusion, which gives ProActive the flexibility to adapt in time with customers’ rapidly changing demands.

“Product iteration was fast using Adobe ColdFusion,” says Vishal Nath, CIO of ProActive Software. “As our customer base grew and our product matured, we had to create application program interfaces (APIs) for customers so they could create apps and reports with their own data. We did that quickly with ColdFusion.”

Adobe has been a trusted ProActive partner for over 14 years and is playing a key role in ProActive Software’s mobile strategy. The new ProWorkflow Mobile service extends the solution to customers’ smartphones and tablets. The mobile app has a front-end framework that talks to the company’s API, which was developed in Adobe ColdFusion.

The next step for ProActive Software is experimenting with apps in Adobe Creative Cloud, bringing development and design closer together. The new Adobe Stock will help the team improve design elements, while Adobe Typekit will provide typographic inspiration.

“After 14 years, it’s difficult to fully quantify the value we’ve realized from Adobe,” Nath says. “However, we know how other developers and development companies operate and compared to them we know we’re saving development time and costs with ColdFusion. We’re incredibly efficient by comparison.”

ColdFusion Marketing

Last year was the 20th year of ColdFusion and thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the customers it was a great hit. The celebrations culminated at the ColdFusion Summit 2015 which was the largest ColdFusion Summit we had till date.

2016 promises to be great year for ColdFusion with the new release. Some of the activities that we are planning on doing this year are:

1. ColdFusion Champions – We are creating a CF Champions team which would help us with community building, helping us with blogs and some technical articles. We already have Dave Ferguson, Dave Epler and Kev McCabe signed on. Look out for articles from them. If you are interested in joining the Champions team please reach out to me. This team would also help in promoting ColdFusion in some of the developer conferences. This is one of our efforts to rebuild the developer evangelist ecosystem so would appreciate all the help we could get.

2. User Groups – The ColdFusion user group managers have done an awesome job of helping us to keep in touch with our Developer base. UGMs like Dan Fredericks, Giancarlo to name a few have put in a lot of effort in making their groups meet regularly. We would continue to support the User Groups, if you want to create a new User Group in your area or want to find if there are any User Groups are there in your area, let us know we would help you.

3. E-Seminar and Technical articles – We would be having a Developer week in April first week which would talk about the new features of ColdFusion. This would be followed by a technical e-Seminar once every month. I would follow up on the time slot for the meeting very soon. If the community wants to contribute to the Technical articles or blogs on Adobe.com please reach out to me, Elishia or Rakshith. We would love to have you write about ColdFusion and would promote the articles so that it reaches out to our developers.

4. ColdFusion Summit – Last year we had around 500+ attendees for the ColdFusion Summit. This is one of the largest developer events at Adobe. This year the Summit would be held at Mandalay Bay on October 10th – 11th. The pricing for the event would be the same as last year. We hope to see a large participation this year since 95% have rated the quality of session content as above average and 93% have said that they are very likely to recommend this event to their peers.

5. ColdFusion Government Summit – Since most of our Government customers were not able to travel to Vegas we are having an one-day ColdFusion Summit for Government on March 9th in Washington DC at Washington Hiltion . We are also planning on having an event at our India office for the ColdFusion customers in India in Q3.

6. Sponsorships – We would be at our usual events like NC Dev con and CF Camp this year. We are also looking at other events where we could meet the decision makers and prospective new developers, so the list of events that we sponsor might increase.

7. Customer Outreach – We have been having 1:1 discussion with some of our large customers to let them know about what are the features in the new version of ColdFusion and working with them in case they have any issues. If you want us to have the Roadmap discussion with your organization please let us know.

These are some of the activities that have been planned for this year. If you have any other ideas about how best to increase ColdFusion presence do reach out to me Kishore@adobe.com

Enabling Employee Recognition in Record Time

Inspirus develops software applications that help customers inspire their workers through effective employee recognition and rewards programs. For more than two decades, Inspirus has developed its solutions on the Adobe ColdFusion platform using rapid prototyping and agile software development methods.

“ColdFusion and agile development are a natural fit, giving us the flexibility to change direction with ease and mock up a new solution in an acceptable timeframe,” says Steve Black, Manager of Development at Inspirus. “Rapid application development has resulted in a flexible platform that supports our client-centric business model for branding client solutions in a cost-effective, scalable way.”

The Texas-based company modifies its existing code base to show customers prototypes and iterations rapidly. The speed with which Inspirus responds to customers’ needs has resulted in a pattern of repeat business. Adobe ColdFusion also enables rapid conversions of legacy systems. For example, Inspirus saved 37 days of production time, which helped get the product to market much faster than originally anticipated. http://adobe.ly/1LohV7X

Since 2004, Promisan has built its management consulting and
systems business by creating tools that help clients optimize how they use
information. Promisan’s flagship enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution,
Prosis, surpasses rival solutions because it has been built using the stable,
mature, and powerful Adobe ColdFusion
platform. ColdFusion gives Promisan the flexibility to meet changing customer
requirements and to integrate with a variety of IT infrastructures

“Adobe ColdFusion is a fantastic application server that
outperforms others at a significantly lower cost of ownership. Because it’s
based on a J2EE-compliant Java platform, it readily supports Linux, Solaris,
Mac, and Windows operating systems. The platform integrates seamlessly into
Java and C++ projects—providing outstanding flexibility in the demanding,
challenging ERP arena,” says Jorge Armin Mazariegos, co-founder and operations
manager at Promisan.

Prosis has helped one global company cut staffing report times
from three days to one minute and a recruiting agency to gain real-time insight
into job recruiting status. The ERP system has also helped a crude oil
distributor cut the time required to refill storage tanks by 67%.

Adobe ColdFusion has allowed Promisan to eliminate nearly all
third-party tools for solution development. With ColdFusion, Promisan
developers have achieved a sustainable business model for Prosis that can
support sites with anywhere from 5 to 5,000 users accessing more than 1,500
normalized database tables.  http://adobe.ly/1BWdfnE

Improving European education with collaborative applications

Educators and students throughout Europe benefit from the
technological innovations that European Schoolnet builds using Adobe ColdFusion.
The consortium of 31 education ministries develops programs and projects that
benefit teachers, pupils, researchers, and industry partners who share the goal
of improving the quality of education in Europe.

European Schoolnet serves more than 250,000 users and 25
different languages with projects like the eTwinning portal, a virtual meeting
point for the exchange of information between schools. It provides all the
tools and services schools need to find partners, resources, advice, help, and
information, and even to build eTwinning projects in partnership with each
other. To support its objectives, eTwinning needed to integrate smoothly with a
wide range of third-party technologies, APIs, frameworks, and existing Oracle
databases while still aligning with the organization’s rapid development
methodology.

“Development in Adobe ColdFusion is easily 40% faster than in
other development environments. Significant time efficiencies are found in
early development stages, faster coding, extensive code reusability, testing,
and debugging,” says Bart Vanhulle, technical manager and lead developer,
European Schoolnet. “In addition, any conceptual, integration, and
methodological challenges are readily addressed through the highly effective
Adobe ColdFusion online developer community.” http://adobe.ly/1xGtlOV

Speed and performance for fans of speed and performance

As specialists in tuning web applications for maximum
performance, developers at Webapper understand the expectations of a client
such as RACERSITES, a leading designer, developer, and content manager for many
of the top brands in motor sports. Websites for some of racing’s biggest
events, such as the Grand Prix of Monaco, the Indianapolis 500, and the
Coca-Cola 600, may experience traffic spikes up to 4,000% on race days. To keep
race fans satisfied, Webapper leveraged Adobe ColdFusion
to remove application bottlenecks and combined it with Amazon cloud services
for scalability.

ColdFusion has great performance metrics monitoring
capabilities
,” says Patrick Quinn, co-founder and chief technology officer at
Webapper. “Based on data from many years of racing events, we were able to
deliver data to the Amazon engineers so they could implement pre-warming
strategies that would anticipate and handle previously unforgiving traffic
peaks on race days.

Before migrating to the cloud, as many as four ColdFusion servers
labored to answer up to 50 requests per second. By combining extensive
bottleneck analysis and tuning inside the new elastic hosting structure, the
team was able to keep request levels on each server below 20 requests per
second by handling large volumes with as many as eight ColdFusion servers at
peak, plus an active/passive Microsoft SQL Server database cluster. http://adobe.ly/1r9hULg

You could also get to hear from Patrick at ColdFusion Summit on October 16-17 in Las Vegas.

Innovation to solve business problems

As a provider of
IT solutions to government and private organizations, Digicon leverages Adobe ColdFusion
to give itself a unique competitive advantage. Specifically, Digicon uses
ColdFusion to build modules for internal implementation, then rapidly provision
and host the results commercially.

Our ability to
build applications in ColdFusion and quickly deliver them to customers gives us
a huge advantage over competitors who use other development environments,
” says
Mark DeLaney, senior application developer at Digicon.

Successful projects include a youth summer job program in which Digicon
replaced 50 paper forms with a new digital application system. The web-based
system can be used on smartphones, tablets, and even video game consoles, which
encourages greater participation from youth, as well as employers. To
date, nearly 5,200 jobs have been filled, which has had a significant impact on
meeting community needs. http://adobe.ly/1uTEQES
