Adobe ColdFusion at Lenox

People are cooking and eating at home more often for their health and for the fun of it, which is good news for Lenox Corporation. The luxury tableware and gift maker is taking advantage of the shift in preferences by upgrading its technologies to target younger audiences who do much of their shopping online.

Implementing Adobe ColdFusion Enterprise lets Lenox update apps it has built over the past 19 years and create new apps that enhance e-commerce capabilities. For instance, the company is converting external ColdFusion applications, such as its B2B and supply chain websites, and internal applications including business intelligence tools and its employee intranet.

As my developers convert applications, they find new features in Adobe ColdFusion that accelerate and simplify processes,” says Betty Jeitner, Senior Director IT Applications, Lenox Corporation. “At this point, we have yet to discover everything we can do.”

Currently, three developers support ColdFusion rapid application development, long-term usage, and system stability. Once they migrate ColdFusion to new hardware, the team will also integrate it with mission-critical software, including Lenox’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.  https://adobe.ly/2lumwF7

Scalable and Affordable Performance Coaching

Leadership coaching and development can benefit leaders at any level, helping employees contribute more effectively to an organization and improve the work environment as a whole. However, coaching has traditionally been a costly endeavor only open to employees at the highest level.

Skyline Group International approaches leadership differently. Using technology, Skyline provides high-quality, personalized coaching that is both scalable and affordable. Skyline’s Coaching for Excellence (C4X) platform provides flexible one-to-one coaching anytime, anywhere through online access.

Each C4X program is a 16-week process that combines online meetings with coaches and independent study using C4X online resources, which include videos, white papers, and articles. HR managers can monitor progress via C4X’s real-time dashboard. Mobile capabilities allow clients, leaders, coaches, and HR managers to access C4X functionality from any device.

When Skyline was developing its first iteration of C4X, it evaluated multiple development platforms. It selected Adobe ColdFusion for its rapid programming capabilities, enterprise security, and “battle-tested” technology.

From a single set of schematics, the first C4X application was deployed within 12 weeks using Adobe ColdFusion,” says Milo Sindell, President of C4X Product Development at Skyline Group, Inc. “It’s now grown to four products with dozens features, multiple administration areas, reporting capabilities, and a user interface that continually evolves with client needs.”

Developers enhanced ColdFusion capabilities by integrating with external services, such as SendGrid for email and Java-based libraries, and supporting systems such as Sublime Text and CodeKit. The built-in PDF rendering engine and custom fonts in ColdFusion allow HR managers to generate visually appealing reports.

“Skyline is continually evolving C4X to meet the needs of our customers,” says Stacy Shamberger, Executive Vice President of People and Revenue at Skyline Group, Inc. “We see Adobe ColdFusion supporting that growth for years to come.”   https://adobe.ly/2gmPstr

CF Summit 2017- Preconference almost sold out!

There are only a few seats available for our preconference workshops on Developing an Enterprise API Strategy, Hands on CFML Security Workshop and Migrating Legacy Applications Into an MVC Framework, so we will be closing registration very soon due to capacity limitations.  Please register today if you haven’t yet!

All the three workshops are full day BYOD hands on labs and would be a great learning opportunity. Below is a summary of the workshops:

Developing an Enterprise API Strategy with Adobe ColdFusion API Manager & Deploying them in Amazon Web Services (AWS

In this session, attendees will learn how to:

  • Integrate ColdFusion and API Manager to create and publish ColdFusion REST services for consumption by any service or application as ColdFusion API-Manager Publisher
  • Subscribe and consume application data via REST services as API-Manager Subscriber
  • Enforce data transformation and threat protection policies as API-Manager Administrator discover ColdFusion REST services from API Manager
  • Deploy existing and new ColdFusion licenses using Amazon EC2
  • Configure a secure and reliable Amazon Virtual Private Cloud across multiple data centers
  • Create an auto-scaling configuration within AWS using EC2, Elastic Beanstalk and Elastic Load Balancer
  • Follow standard DevOps processes to deploy code from local development to production with minimal direct interaction with servers

Hands on CFML Security Workshop

Bring your laptop and get your hands dirty learning how to find and fix security vulnerabilities in your ColdFusion codebases. In this full day session you will learn about several different classes of web application security vulnerabilities and how they pertain to CFML.

Using a vulnerable CFML web application prebuilt for training, you will learn what red flags to look for in your code. Next you will see first hand how attackers may exploit the vulnerabilities. Finally you’ll learn techniques for improving the security of your CFML code.

Migrating Legacy Applications Into an MVC Framework

Come to this workshop and learn:

  • What the MVC design pattern is and what problems it solves
  • How the FW/1 and ColdBox frameworks use a convention-based approach to bring consistent structure to an application
  • What Dependency Injection (DI) is, how it simplifies the “model” portion of applications, and how they are used in FW/1 and ColdBox
  • How to refactor real-world procedural code into MVC-style code

Hands-on portion of the workshop will:

  • Analyze and deconstruct a simple procedural application to see what code belongs in the model, the view, and how the controller ties the two together.
  • Move the code into the appropriate MVC layers and test it.
  • Discuss strategies for migrating large applications in phases.
  • Use CommandBox and Git to spin up on-demand instances of ColdFusion and manage our code.

Keeping Group Activities Organized

Just about anyone who’s coordinated snacks for group activity knows what it’s like to see participants either show up with nothing or a lot of the same thing. Such snafus prompted the founders of SignUpGenius to create a better way to organize events. The site www.signupgenius.com offers sign-up creation, group messaging, and administrative tools for free, and a premium version also includes reporting, automation, and advanced admin features.

“The site’s simple and powerful online sign-up forms replace paper sign-up sheets and reply-all emails for hassle-free event coordination,” says Jad Talbert, Vice President of Architecture at SignUpGenius. “With Adobe ColdFusion and a small development team, we build easy-to-use products that help users simplify their busy schedules.”

Since it was launched in 2008, SignUpGenius has added features and improved application performance with Adobe ColdFusion to support processing large volumes of simultaneous sign-ups per second, sending millions of reminder emails per month, and processing large reports for users in real time Besides helping the company’s team of eight full-time developers update features quickly, Adobe ColdFusion supports scalable business flexibility.

A multi-instance deployment lets SignUpGenius triple online traffic to each of its servers, which makes it easier for the company to handle busy times and keep applications running smoothly for users. The company is also evaluating the new ColdFusion feature that allows session sharing across servers to improve load balancing. https://adobe.ly/2neByxy
